About

In 1987, Hālau Hōʻ'ola Ka Mana O Hawaiʻi was born. The hālau has performed throughout the State of Texas teaching traditional hula and spreading the true spirit of aloha. The hālau has participated at the prestigious Folklife Festival in San Antonio, and the world famous Dickens on the Strand in Galveston. The hālau has also performed at the world famous Kodak Hula Show in Waikīkī.

The hālau has also competed in many competitions in California and Hawaiʻi. In 2000, the hālau was invited to compete at the world famous Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo, Hawaiʻi. The hālau continues to compete and spread traditional Hawaiian Culture through hula throughout the State of Texas and beyond. In 2013, our Houston halau partnered with our sister halau from Dallas, TX and Lawton, OK to enter Ho'ike Hawai'i and showcase the livelihood of hula here in the Southwest. It was our first time entering this competition hosted in Orlando, FL, and we placed in 6 out of 7 of our entries.

In the later part of 2013, Kumu Hula Frank Keli'i Chang, III decided to entrust his hula studio to his sisters, Kumu Hula Nani Kamali'i-Chang and Mei Ling Alapa'i Chang. Under their direction, the hula studio is now named Ka Pā Hula Nā Pua O Kamali'i.  The name of the halau means "Perpetuating Our Cultures" because they are dedicated to seeing hula and polynesian dances live on through their teaching and their students. We are fortunate that they are also continuing on as being the only traditional hula/polynesian dance school based in Houston, Texas.

In the summer of 2014, Kumu Hula Nani Kamali'i-Chang and Mei Ling Alapa'i Chang took the Houston halau and sister halau from Dallas, TX and Lawton, OK to Ho'ike Hawai'i -- and once again, we showed everyone how hula lives on in the Southwest!  We were proud that all seven of our entries placed across group, solo and Tahitian categories.

We hope that whether you are new to the Polynesian arts, or you're a natural trying to find an 'ohana in Houston -- you'll join our halau and continue this legacy with us.
